DESIGN INTENT

To create a library that invites curiosity and calm in equal measure - a place where students can study deeply, move lightly, and experience a quiet nature connection without leaving campus.

BACKGROUND

The existing library feels outdated, lacks a clear focal point, and offers little connection to the natural world. Observations showed students seeking privacy from distractions and using the space mainly for power and internet. This project responds by bringing nature indoors and creating an environment that feels both restorative and productive.

CONTEXTUAL STATEMENT

A biophilic redesign of the Griffith South Bank Library that reconnects students with nature while supporting focused study, gentle movement, and everyday wellbeing on campus.

DESIGN DETAILS

Hexagonal Study Combs — nature-themed study pods for focused, semi-private study by minimising distractions and noice.
Central native garden with surrounding seating
Strategic skylights linking the interior to changing weather and natural light
Seaweed-inspired floor paths that gently guide movement
Playful street signs to aid wayfinding and discovery
Local artist-painted gum tree at the entrance (door, ceiling and floor)
Hydration stations and dual-screen dock technology
